Notes for George McGREGOR
George immigrated to Canada in 1833 with his parents. As the ship on which they were immigrating neared port, it was rammed by another ship. When they reached port, 10-year-old George was the only passenger who could identify the ship that rammed them.11 The McGregors were pioneer settlers of Red Cloud ON near Dawson's Mill.40 George bought land at Lot 31, Concession 10, Cramahe Township.11 George used advanced geometry in his work, though he never went to school in Canada. He was much in demand to advise about millwheels and control of water flow. He had a sawmill at Hopkins Pond near Red Cloud School. He loved to fish for speckled trout in Dawson's Pond.11 George and a friend once bet a farmer they could finish cradling a field by nightfall. The farmer, to prevent their winning, fed them a powerful laxative in the noon meal. George and his friend took their trousers off and just kept on cradling.11 George was a member of the Masons and the Orangemen. He was 5'3" or 5'4" in height.11
