Notes for William Augustus RICHARDS
"William was probably the last child of Owen Richards and Dianah Spencer"117 [but see notes for his probable twin brother Owen].

"As a child of the Loyalist Owen Richards, William was entitled to 200 acres of land in Upper Canada. To obtain this land he had to take an Oath of Allegiance, which he did on September 26, 1823. In 1825, he applied to receive the 200 acres. On January 25 of that year he petitioned as, 'the son of Owen Richards of the Township of Hallowell in the Midland District, a U.E. Loyalist,' to the Crown to 'grant unto him two hundred acres of the waste Lands of the crown.' William Richards took possession of a lot in Hallowell on December 6, 1826."117

"He married Maria, who was born in July of 1808, probably in 1826 or a little earlier. Her maiden name remains a mystery. The children that we know of are William Henry, ... John Colburn ..., Alfred Dempsey ... . We can assume that there were other children born between John Colburn and Alfred Dempsey. William and Maria are known to have been living in or near Athol when Alfred was born. Maria's headstone says she died on August 19, 1845 at the age of 37 years and one month. ... After Maria died William married Ann, who was about four years younger than he was. She gave him Mary M. in about 1848 and Ann E. in about 1850. At the time of the 1861 census they were living in a one and a half story frame house."117

"Aside from being a circuit riding minister and member of the Prince Edward County militia, he was also a farmer. The agricultural part of the 1861 census for William A. Richards of Con. 4 south half lot 1 shows that he held 93 acres; 70 cultivated, 23 under crop; under pasture 40; under orchards or gardens 22 acres; and under wood or wild 23 acres. The cash value of farm in dollars was $2,000.00 and cash value of farm implements was $80.00."117
