Notes for Nicholas Dennis RICHARDS
Warkworth Journal, 1979
"Three Generations of Medical Practice in Warkworth 1860-1926
.....
"Dr. N.D. Richards 1852-1918
" He graduated in medicine at the University of Toronto with honours and a silver medal in 1877. [Note: Carla McKague has this medal.] His sisters operated a carpet factory at their home near Castleton, which helped finance his education.
"He married Margaret McCrea and joined his father-in-law in his practice in Warkworth until Dr. McCrea moved to Campbellford. From this marriage there were five children--Lillian Frances, James Nelson, Mary Edith, Margaret and Johnny.
"His son 'Dr. Jim' joined him in the practice in Warkworth upon graduation from the University of Toronto Medical School. Following the death of his first wife, 'Dr. N.D.' married again, Lulu Curtis of Warkworth. They moved to Belleville where he practised medicine until his death in May 1918. Dr. Richards was known as a kindly gentleman, an ardent Presbyterian and a strong 'Tory'."18

N.D.'s sister Druscilla kept house for him between marriages.11

He bought the Richards farm in 1903 from various family members (for $3400?).11 For the history of the farm, see his sister Drusilla Richards.

On April 8, 1903 N.D. bought a property in Castleton (Lot 116, Castleton village plan, 60 perches of land) from Alfred R. Harvie and his wife Effie M. Harvie for $900.23 This became the home of some or all of his seven sisters, and is currently (1999) owned by Rick and Wanda McKague, who did not know of its history when they acquired it.1
