Notes for Herbert McKAGUE
In 1888, Herbert came west to Oak Lake MB and farmed there for about 6 years. He moved to Melfort SK in June 1894. He applied for homestead entry on SW 18-44-18[-W2] in 1895, and received his patent in 1903.311,314 By 1902 he had 65 acres under cultivation, and had built a frame house, and a log stable in 1896. In partnership with A.E. Quinn, he opened the McKague & Quinn Boarding and Lodging House in September 1903. He later entered the banking business for a short time. Five of their six [surviving] boys were born in the Melfort area. In May 1910 he drove southeast of Melfort looking for free range. South of the present site of McKague, just north of the Barrier River, they squatted until Pat was old enough. Pat then homesteaded the quarter on the edge of McKague. They established a ranch and had a sawmill on Pat's homestead for years. All the boys had land in the area. Over the years, most of the boys moved to BC to the Prince George and Savona areas, and were involved in sawmills. Herbert and Beatrice stayed in the McKague area.311

This is probably the McKague for whom McKague SK was named. There are a number of different stories, but this and variations on it seem the most likely. The CPR went through Herbert's land, and the workers either stayed with Herbert and Beatrice or took their meals there.311
