"Dissatisfied Manitobians try North Dakota and Glad to Get Back
"A few months since Mr. A.W. Gerow of Brandon, through the well-meant intercession of some friends. Meusra Cassidy and Geo. Miller, resideing in North Dakota induced him in a attempt to free himself from the annoyances and drawbacks of Manitoba and secure liberty and success under the stars and stripes. He packed up his household goods loaded them on his wagon and drove down to that part of Turtle Mountain opposite range 35 in this province. He was assured everything was different on the Yankee side of the line. A good many things were, but not altogether to his liking. The country was not surveyed and the land was heavy and dry and almost impossible to cultivate. The incoming mass of settlers didn't come and Mr. Gerow and his friends with their families were left in undisputed possession of a unsurveyed and unattractive area of practically uncultivated prairie. These Gentleman are no means novices and being left with a free choice exercised there best judgement in selecting the best spot. The sequel may be shortly told, Mr. Gerow has returned to Manitoba to stay and has entered for a homestead at the land office in Brandon. Messr's Cassidy and Miller would gladly return if they were in a position to do so.
"Moral - Don't go to Dakota to escape trouble, better to stick to Manitoba."90 |
