Notes for René CHARTIER |
Memories (translated from original French) of one of René's stepsons (not identified in source):
"I would like to tell you what I remember of papa René, who was the brother of our father, the late Benoit, whom Maman married several years after Papa's death.
"We loved him dearly. He took on Papa's burden with respect to Maman and us four brothers. He was truly good.
"He had to work very hard in the mines for several years: the Hellinger Mine, then the McIntyre Mine, and at the same time he came to help us in the woods, cutting and transporting lumber with the carts. Often he arrived from his shift at the mine at four o'clock in the morning and said to me, 'We have to make a trip to the woods at Big Water Lake; we have time before you leave for your eight o'clock shift.' We worked at the Hollinger [Mine] at this time, filling the gravel carts in the mine.
"Later when we were married he continued to work, but in the sawmills, Facette, where Papa Benoit had worked earlier to support Maman. Later he went to work in Elliott Lake Mine, then at Blind River. Maman went with him for several years.
"That's all. Thanks to Papa René for having helped Maman and us, the four brothers."103 |
