Notes for John Diamond McGREGOR | |||||||||||||||||||||
John lived in a number of different homes in Haldimand Township ON and Cramahe Township ON. The last two were the French Farm near Brown's Pond, Concession 6, Cramahe Township ON and the north half, Lot 27, Concession 9, Cramahe Township ON17. He moved to Ogema SK about 1910.17,89 He was a kind and generous man who liked children. He was "not husky". He never went to school, and after their marriage his wife taught him to read and write. He became a great reader, though he did not have the keen intelligence of his wife.17 John built the first tiled well in Ogema; then relatives went there for water because it was so good.90 Once John happened to see a couple of people together on the road who were later suspected of committing a crime. During the trial, a lawyer tried to get John to say that he had only thought he recognized them. Finally the lawyer asked, "Do you say that you did recognize them?". John pounded his fist and emphatically said, "I do." Later another lawyer told John that he could not have had him answer that way for a hundred dollars. John replied that sharpshooting calls for sharpshooters.17 Dorothy Evans (who is a McKague, not a McGregor) has warm memories of John: "John Diamond McGregor was the only granddad I ever had."91 Obituary: "John D. McGregor "The funeral of the late John McGregor took place from the Ogema United Church on Friday, afternoon April the 9th. "The service was conducted by the Rev. J. Bright. A large crowd of sympathizing friends were present. The choir rendered the old hymn 'In the sweet Bye and Bye.' The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, testifying to the esteem in which he was held by all. Of a kind and generous disposition, he was greatly loved and especially by children who crowded his home at all times. He leaves to mourn his loss his three daughters, Mrs Boyd of Warren, Man., Mrs J.B. McKague of Castleton, Ont. and Mrs G.B. Bowen of Warkworth, Ont., also two sons William of Dorland, Sask., and Percival of Ogema. These with eighteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren also two brothers Robt. McGregor of Castleton and George McGregor of Rochester, N.Y., one sister Mrs Covert of Toronto, also his housekeeper, Mrs Beck who has made a home for him for 30 years. "Mr McGregor's wife predeceased him 38 years ago. He had reached the good age of 83 yrs, and was only sick a short time. He came to Ogema 27 years ago from his birthplace of Castleton."25 Obituary: "JOHN McGREGOR "Warkworth, April 13--At his home in Ogema, Sask., there passed away on April 7th, Mr. John McGregor, who used to be well and favorably known here before he went west. "He was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George McGregor, pioneer settlers of Red Cloud, near Dawson's Mill, where he was born 84 years ago. His wife was a Miss Clarke, from near Castleton, who died several years ago and was laid to rest at Castleton. "He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. John McKague, Mount Pleasant; Mrs. Boyd, Warren, Manitoba; and Mrs. George Bowen, of Warkworth, and two sons, William, of Neepawin, Sask., and Percy of Ogema, Sask.; one sister, Mrs. George Covert, of Toronto; and three brothers, Mr. Robert McGregor, Castleton; and James and George McGregor, of Rochester, N.Y.
