Stella was attending the May 24 picnic at Castleton Church, when someone threw a lighted firecracker at her feet as she walked with her boyfriend. The celluloid starch used to stiffen her petticoats caught fire. She was taken to the adjoining manse, where she died June 10. The local minister was too upset to conduct the service, so a neighbouring one was called on.113
