Notes for John Bruce McKAGUE | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
John had scarlet fever as child and became deaf while fairly young. He progressively became more deaf.30 He went to Western Canada twice, but returned both times as he did not like it.101 In 1903, together with Bob Dawson, he set up a telephone service among the McKague house, the McGregor house (the home of his future wife Lena) and the nearby sawmill. This was the beginning of what became the Mount Pleasant Telephone Company.30 In April 1914 he acquired the first part (south half, Lot 27, Concession 9, Cramahe Twp) of what is now Longview Farms from his father, Robert. In March 1919 he added the south 35 acres of the north half, Lot 27, Concession 9, and later the balance of the lot.30 John was Secretary-Treasurer of Mount Pleasant School.30 Dorothy Evans remembers visiting John and Lena on their farm as a child. (Some of her recollections coincide very closely with those of your compilers.) Here's what she said--unfortunately not quoted exactly: "I stayed at the farm for holidays 7 times by the time I was in Grade 9 and what I remember most were the breakfasts. We would appear in the morning and the porridge would be so steaming hot you could see the heat. THEN we would all have to kneel down and pray on the cold floor and sneak a peek at the steam getting less and less. THEN we would get to the table and Uncle John would get the big bible and read and read and read and, finally, we would eat the very cool porridge. "One time when I was there, someone misbehaved and had to go to the woodshed. I don't know what went on there but I took a look at the woodshed afterwards and I never saw so much wood in all my life. I really worried that I might do something bad and have to go to the woodshed. Every time I've ever been to the farm, even now, I still go out and look at the woodshed. I really worried about being bad."90 John and Lena left the farm and moved to Castleton ON in 1964.17 He moved to Sidbrook Hospital, Cobourg, Hamilton Twp, Northumberland Co. ON Canada in 1970.30 His funeral card reads: "Comfort "The Power who pities man has shown / A blessing for the eyes that weep. "The light of smiles shall fill again / The lids that overflow with tears; / And weary hours of woe and pain / Are promises of happier years. "There is a day of sunny rest / For every dark and troubled night; / And grief may bide an evening quest, / But joy shall come with early light. "For God hath marked each sorrowing day / And numbered every secret tear, / And Heaven's long age of bliss shall pay / For all His children suffer here. "William Cullen Bryant "IN MEMORY OF John Bruce McKague In his 93rd year. Beloved husband of the late Lena McGregor.
