Notes for John McKAGUE
John immigrated to Canada about 1823 with his father, and came to Cherry Hill Farm, Hamilton Township, Northumberland County, Ontario.193

John moved to Irish's Corners (now Woodville), Mariposa Township about 1837 and bought a farm (west half, Lot 4, Concession 15). His brothers Robert & George did likewise. The price--it's unclear whether for half or whole lot--was 37 10s, paid as $50 and a team of oxen.6 In 1850 he also acquired Lot 10, Concession 13.

John and some of his family moved to Drayton in Maryborough Twp, Wellington Co. ON.30,194 "They homesteaded the eighth parcel, Concession 10, Maryborough Twp, and are indicated on the 1851 census. "196 The 1861 census shows John's family there. It includes John, Nancy, Benjamin, Arthur, James, Mary, Elizabeth and Martha.200

One source says that John and Nancy had nine children.192
Research Notes
BIRTH: John's birthdate is very uncertain. We have several versions. He's shown as 61 in the 1861 census,195 and as 70 (born in Ireland) in the 1871 census.194 A picture of his gravestone shows 1793,197 or possibly 1798.196 We also have 1798193,2,191 and 1800.193,2 One source shows 1800, with no parentage shown and the place given as Woodville.192

DEATH: The death date is equally uncertain. Most sources show 1888, but a picture of the gravestone shows 1880197 or 1886,196 and 1886 has been advanced.2

BURIAL: We're also told that John and Nancy's bodies were removed from their original graves in McIndoo Cemetery and re-interred elsewhere198--probably Drayton Cemetery.9

CHILDREN: One source indicates a son Isaac, born 1838/39, but does not include Hiram.201

MISC: In the 1871 census, John's religion is given as "Christian".202

QUESTION: This may be the John McKEAG(E) who was a member of the Northumberland County militia in 1828, aged 28. Or that may be his cousin, William's son.108,104
