Notes for Joseph H. McKAGUE
Joe emigrated to the US in 1864.455 He went to Nebraska, where he worked on a farm. His route may have been Ontario to Michigan to Minnesota to Nebraska.231 He went to Racine, Minnesota at age nineteen (so about 1866).445 In 1870 he was living there with his sister Mariah and her husband.245 There he met and married his wife Mary. [There is some suggestion that Joe worked as a farmhand for Mary and her first husband.] They were still there in 1875.244 On Feb 27, 1879 Mary McKAGUE sold her land in section 21, township 104, range 14 [Mower Co. MN US] to Labon C. PERRY [her first husband's brother?]. (Joseph never owned the land after marriage to Mary)237 In 1879 the couple took up a homestead near Creighton NB.445 In 1880, Joe was living in the village of Raligh, Center Precinct, Antelope Co. NE. His brother George was living with them.239 In 1885, he was farming in Eden Precinct, Antelope Co. NE US. He had 60 tillable acres and 220 unimproved acres. The farm was valued at $3,200, the farm implements at $156 and the livestock at $290. He had 2 horses, 1 milch cow, 1 other cow (during 1884 1 calf had been born and 1 calf/cow sold), 19 swine, and 60 barnyard poultry. The value of farm productions sold, consumed or on hand for 1884 was $170. In 1884 the farm had produced 100 lbs of butter, 240 dozen eggs, 500 bushels of Indian corn (on 20 acres), 250 bushels of oats (on 10 acres), 48 bushels of wheat (on 5 acres) and 15 acres worth of Irish potatoes.506 At a later date Joe and Mary moved to Watervliet MI, and then from 1901 to 1906 lived in Minneapolis MN, where Joe worked as a tinner.461 His address in 1902 was 37th Ave., northeast corner of Jackson St. (on the city border with Columbia Heights).449 In 1904 it was 3120 Polk Ave., Minneapolis.450 In 1905 and 1906 it was 2911 Central Ave., Minneapolis.451,458 Then they purchased a farm near Walnut Grove MN.461 Joe was living in [near?] Walnut Grove in 1909.444 He is shown on the 1910 census for Gales Township, just outside Walnut Grove, living with Mary, J. Winifred, and grandson Avon.454 By 1920 they had moved into town, and appear on the Walnut Grove census for that year as J.H., Mary, Avon and Evelyn.455 Joe [and presumably Mary?] spent his last three years in his son Win's home.445
