Notes for William McKAGUE
William immigrated to Ontario with his parents about 182330--the date is very uncertain.

Legend has it that William first saw Elizabeth when he came to her home on an errand and saw her doing the family wash. The clothes were in a huge washtub and she was in the tub with her skirts tucked up trampling on the clothes. He is said to have fallen in love with her on the spot.6,30

William and his family left Cherry Hill Farm (see his father's card) and moved to Mariposa Township along with his brothers about 1837.6,73,103 William and Elizabeth returned to Cherry Hill about 1840,73,103 apparently because his father needed help6 or to care for his parents.30

Elizabeth and William first lived in a log cabin, but built a frame house about 1840. It burned down in the 1950s.6 They provided lumber for the first Baptist church in Cobourg ON.30 Sometime during the Crimean War William acquired more land, buying the north half of Lot 1, Concession 1, Hamilton Township.30 The William McKague family lived next door to Parkers (Lot 1, Concession 1, Hamilton Twp.) Polly Parker (nee Flake) is mother to both Parker and Sinclair children.63

William was described as tall and sturdy.30 He was "born again" and baptized in Mariposa.30,103 He chewed tobacco. He had rheumatism30,103 and used crutches in old age.30

Obituary:
"McKAGUE.--Died, at his residence, Cherry Hill, township of Hamilton, Ont., Jan. 12, 1889, Wm. McKague, in the 77th year of his age.
"Deceased was born in the County of Cavan, Ireland, and came to this country with his parents when a lad of seventeen, being one of a large family of sons and daughters. They finally settled on a farm about six miles from Cobourg, and being associated with Baptists and searchers of the Scriptures, they eventually left the Established Church and united with the our [sic] denomination, the family consisting of parents, four sons and four daughters, and their husbands and wives. Deceased, at the age of twenty-three, married Elizabeth Coyle, and soon after moved to Mariposa, where he was brought under conviction of sin and found the Saviour, and was baptized by Elder March. After a stay of three years he returned to Cobourg, where he lived to see five generations of his family, many of whom preceded him to the better land, and died in peace on January 12th last. Of late years he suffered much from rheumatism, which he bore with patience and resignation. He leaves a widow and ten chldren to mourn their loss, and prepare to meet him in the better land.
