Notes for Isaac Wilson McKAGUE
In 1861, Isaac, Sarah and Winfield were living in Maryborough Twp, Wellington Co. ON. He was a labourer with a half-acre lot (described as "quantity of land attached to tenement"--does this mean he was renting his home?)263 Isaac moved from Ontario to Michigan.264 On June 1, 1870 Isaac purchased land in Michigan: "the South half of the North East quarter of Section twelve in Township ten North of Range eleven East in the District of Lands subject to sale at East Saginaw Michigan containing Eighty acres".265 He was living in Almont Twp, Lapeer Co. MI in 1870,182,266 in Center Precinct, Antelope Co. NE in 1880,239 and in Boulder Precinct, Township #12, Jefferson Co. MT in 1900.267
Research Notes | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
NAME: His first names are also given as Issac W.268 BIRTH: Isaac's birthdate is also given as Jan 20, 1835.269 In the 1870 census, he is shown as 32, born in Canada, parents of foreign birth.266 In 1861 he is shown as 23.270 In the 1880 census he is shown as 42, born Canada, father born in Ireland, mother in New York.239 Isaac's death certificate gives his mother as Martha TOWER, born in New York.262 He is also shown as born in Scotland271--clearly wrong. His male parentage is confirmed with no date or place given.231 MARRIAGE: His marriage to Sarah is confirmed with no date given.268,261,271 To complicate things, one source has Isaac McKAGUE and Susan TORVER married July 7, 1858.54 [We have his father George marrying Susan TOWER.] CHILDREN: One source shows all Isaac's children born in Michigan.264 One source lists 8 children--doesn't have the twins, and has only one Charles H.272 Another shows two Charles H.s (1871 and 1873).182 A third shows 9 children--omits the twins and one of the Charles H.s, but shows an Andrew A. (Oct 1861). This doesn't fit with Wesley John's birthdate, which is given as both Jan 16, 1861 and Jan 16, 1862, but pretty clearly has to be 1862 because of conflict with Wellington's birth in Aug 1860. Andrew just doesn't have room to fit in.181 Sarah's obituary describes her as the mother of 11 children, of whom 3 are deceased,182 so what is here seems the most likely to be accurate. MISC: Isaac's Michigan land grant reads as follows: "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA "CERTIFICATE "No. 10600 "To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting: "Whereas Isaac W. McKague of Lapeer County Michigan has deposited in the GENERAL LAND OFFICE of the United States, a certificate of the REGISTER OF THE LAND OFFICE at East Saginaw Michigan whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said Isaac W.
